A Look at October

On this day in Arkansas weather history, the state has experienced a range of significant weather events that have shaped local meteorological records. While October often marks the beginning of cooler, autumn-like weather, it has also been a time of sudden shifts and unexpected extremes.

Notable Weather Events:

  • October Tornadoes (1996)
On October 22, 1996, an EF2 tornado struck parts of southeast Arkansas. The twister caused widespread damage, particularly in the small towns along its path, with winds reaching speeds up to 125 mph. Fortunately, despite the destruction, there were no fatalities reported.

  • First Frosts and Freezes In many years, October 22 has been a date when Arkansas records its first frost or freeze of the season, particularly in the northern and mountainous regions. Freezing temperatures mark the end of the growing season for farmers, and it’s a signal for residents to prepare for colder weather ahead.

  • October Cold Fronts Historically, powerful cold fronts have moved through Arkansas around this time, bringing the first real taste of winter. These fronts often drop temperatures by 20°F or more, signaling a sharp transition from the mild early fall temperatures to the brisk late fall.

  • Droughts and Fire Hazards (2005) In October 2005, Arkansas was in the grip of a severe drought, and fire dangers were at a critical level. This was a period where dry conditions across the state created a heightened risk for wildfires, particularly in forested areas like the Ouachita Mountains.

Seasonal Changes in Arkansas

By late October, Arkansans often experience some of the most beautiful fall foliage, particularly in the Ozarks and Ouachita Mountains. The cooler air from Canada often pushes southward, causing daytime temperatures to be pleasant, with highs ranging from the mid-60s to low 70s, and nighttime lows dipping into the 40s and 50s.

Did You Know?

The earliest recorded snowfall in Arkansas happened on October 29, 1913. Though rare, snowfall has occasionally touched the state in October.

October is typically one of the driest months for Arkansas, but when rain does occur, it’s often due to cold fronts or the remnants of tropical storms.

Weather patterns during October can be unpredictable in Arkansas, making it a fascinating time for meteorologists and weather enthusiasts alike.
